("I'd Rather Be Playing Golf" by Bill Smith)
Colne Golf Club is the ideal location for a day's golf. Viewed here from Noyna Rocks, Foulridge, our peaceful rural location can readily be appreciated. Easily accessible from the M65 motorway to the west, or the A56 and A6068 roads from Yorkshire, the course is located on the north easterly side of town, nestling between the Yorkshire Dales and the Ribble Valley, and at just over 6000 yards, offers a stern test for even the most discerning player. The Wuthering Heights moors of Bronte Sisters' literary fame can be seen from the course, and Pendle Hill dominates the horizon to the west. Members at Colne are proud of their course, clubhouse and catering facilities, which are second to none in the area, and welcome visitors to sample this "little gem" hidden on the outskirts of town. Non playing partners can also find plenty to do in the area, as Boundary Mill, Haworth and the "Gateway to the Dales" town of Skipton are all close by.
The club came into being as a consequence of the first General Meeting being called on the 11th of November, 1901. George Lowe, who was "Custodian of the Links" at Lytham St. Annes Golf Club, took up the challenge of laying out a course. The newly formed Council had identified two possible sites for the course at Moss House and Law Quarry. George Lowe inspected the proposed sites and recommended that Moss House should not be considered. Law Quarry - renamed Law Farm - was therefore selected, and as the saying goes, the rest is history!
